Wes Brown Wins Seventh Enduro at Chico
by Troy Hennig

CHICO, CA (5-27-08) - Chico's Wes Brown is the man when it comes to Enduro racing at Silver Dollar Speedway. Brown entered this year's race as the six time champion of the 200-lap fair Enduro race and had won the last four years in a row. The only other driver able to beat Brown was fellow Chico driver Gene Guinn. In the nine year history of this race only Brown and Guinn have visited victory lane. Yet, this year it seemed this streak was ready to end. At the half way point, Brown was 4 laps down to leader Jay Cookson of Windsor.
During the final 100 laps Brown had made back 2 of the laps but with just 20 laps to go it did not seem possible for the six-time champion to win again. But then again, this is Silver Dollar Speedway and we are talking about Wes Brown. On lap 181 Cookson had a flat tire. To his credit he drove the next seven laps with the ill-handling car. Finally on lap 188 he pulled to the pit area. The hometown crowd went wild. Brown made up the two laps and officially became the leader on lap 189. He led the final eleven laps to get the popular win. This year's race was hands down the most exciting finish we had seen.
Finishing second was Gene Guinn Jr. who had his best run to date during the Enduro race. Making his first start at Chico was third place finishing Fritz Zanker of Chico. David Papst Jr. stayed solid all race long to finish fourth. The heart break kid, Cookson, finished in the fifth spot. Cookson had led over 100 laps during this race. The Orange Crush cars and fans were once again in full-force this Monday. Two of their three drivers finished in the next two spots. Tim Vaught of Chico finished sixth while Jeremy Stone followed in seventh. Wes Brown Jr. of Chico had the early lead of the race but fell back to an eighth place finish. Kelli Ruley had some misfortune on the racing surface but still finished ninth.
Another heart breaker was Dan Reed of Santa Rosa. Reed has been competing at the Chico Enduro for many years. He is also a top competitor. This year at the half way point we was tied with Cookson for the lead. In fact, Reed passed Cookson for the lead early into the final 100 lap segment. However, disaster struck around lap 130 when he was spun around in turn four and then was able to continue on but going into turn two he spun again and got stuck on a big white tire in the infield. He was stuck until late in the race before help from another driver dislodged him off the tire. Reed finished tenth.

Halloween Pumpkin Smash 10/27/07
By Ken Winland

Enduro Cars, Pumpkins & a full moon were on tap during the season ending Pumpkin Smash Enduro @ Altamont Motorsports Park.
The West Coast Enduro regulars were joined by Caddys, Camaros, Monte Carlos and compacts for the annual running of the always popular Pumpkin Smash Enduro. 56 cars entered the arena for the chance to win the $4000.00 first place prize. The cars ranged from veteran enduro cars to the newly built entries and even one 4 cylinder joined the excitement.
The “enduro of all enduros” combined 2 tracks into one very exciting race. The cars started on the pumpkin strewn road course for 75 laps, had a short break and then completed another 75 laps. Then the intermission was followed by 150 laps on the ¼ mile oval. The track remained very slick and slippery throughout the night which tested every driver in every way possible, it was like driving on ice at times and getting out of the racing groove into the pumpkin snot guaranteed a spin or 2. The very large crowd was entertained throughout the evening as carnage happened around every corner.

As the pumpkin snot settled, David Pabst in his # 2 Camaro took the checkered flag and out-dueled runner up Joe Addison in the #02 Monte Carlo by 4 laps to capture his 5th win bringing his winnings to $9000.00 for the 2007 season. 3rd place went to Craig Mastropierro in his #73m Camaro. The #24 of Adam Bagget who won a guaranteed top 5 spot based on his performance in the August races finished 4th followed by the #8 of Chad Holeman.

WCE enduro wants to thank Altamont Motorsports Park and General Manager Jeff Macey for supporting our class of racing during the 2007 season. We have certainly built the framework to have an exciting 2008 racing season @ Altamont.

See you in 2008!

A few minutes of video, enjoy!

Altamont closes their large Saturday Night program with the West Coast Enduro cars!
by Ken Winland
Altamont keeps the crowd entertained with their full and exciting racing program.
Saturday evenings action highlited by the twin 50 lap Western Late Models, the mini trucks, mini stocks, Alsc, Sprints and Modifieds also saw the running of the enduro cars on the road track for 75 exciting laps.
14 cars entered the wet track at 10pm. We saw our 4th winner in 4 races as action continued to lap 75 when Jay Cookson in the 96 chevy powered camaro beat the 04 Monte Carlo of Robert Daniels to the finish line by 4.78 seconds. Jay has been a consistant front runner all season long at Altamont playing runner up on a few occasions, in fact Jay is solidly locked into the 10/27 Pumpkin Smash by virtue of great finishes. The top 5 included #8 Kanai Scantlen in 3rd, #95 of Larry Moniz and the #22 of Ben Lewis a previous Altamont winner.
New comer Fred Burgener in the #66W car had his hands full with mechancal issues and the #4 of John Byram, out of racing since 2002, did his best to work out the bugs in his newly built camaro. Derek Schimmel in the #93 got a solid 10th place finish after installing a motor the night before and #37 freshly built camaro of Tony Mentzer(3rd car of the season and built in one week) worked out a few bugs with an 11th place finish.
All in all it was a great ending to a great action packed program at Altamont Motorpsorts Park.
October will be an exciting month for the enduro cars as Roseville, Petaluma, Madera and Altamont have large races scheduled.

WCE Press Release
Orland 200 Lap Enduro 7/28/07

Race report by Ken Winland

In my diligence to get me car ready to help out the car count for Orland, I ripped my bicep, relegating me to the fan perspective for the remainder of the 2007 season.

Orland Raceway 1/5 mile clay oval was the host for the latest rendition of the West Coast Enduro 200 lap race. A 98 degree day greeted drivers and fans alike. A day that seemed to get warmer as the sun set.

10 drivers took the green flag for the first 100 laps in the counter clockwise direction. All cars were strong during the first 100 lap shoot out. Action was stopped at lap 50 to
re-wet the track(note to promoters: do this quickly as a 98 degree day takes its toll on the drivers cars, 15 minutes is too long) . Half way leaders included the 18, 42, 92, 58,12.

All of the original cars were joined by a newly built Monte Carlo for the second 100 lap segment.

Race favorites including the #2 had problems early with a flat tire and eventual fire which ended his night early,(good job to the fire crew who put the fire out in the infield)the other race favorite in the 92 lost 5 or so laps with a flat tire in the second half .

This allowed the very consistent and deserving Brian Compton in the Chevy Camaro #18 to become the winner. The local Chico driver recently took 2nd and 3rd during enduro action in May. Durham driver Gene Guinn took 2nd and Santa Rosa driver Dan Reed took 3rd.

WCE want to thank Orland for their hosting of this enduro. Other than the long red flags to rewet the track and inconsistent restarting of the race, we all enjoyed our experience. We hope that Orland can get the business side of the business figured out so we can continue to run there in the future. It takes more fans and more racers to keep this sport successful. Please do your part supporting a track near you!

This race was a perfect warm up for the Altamont 200 laps on the road course on Sunday August 5th.
